Public Advisory: Extension Provided for Oil Tank Certifications

The Provincial Government has provided Nunatsiavut Supplies Ltd. with an extension to finalize repairs, installations and certifications of oil tanks in Inuit communities under the Government Assistance Program.

As announced on November 25, 2011, Nunatsiavut Supplies Ltd. was awarded the contract as the second bidder in the tender process and as a result, the work started later than anticipated and consequently, the work will continue beyond the original tender completion date of December 31, 2011.

Repairs and installations have concluded in Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet. Repairs and installations for Nain and final inspections and certifications for all five communities will begin early in the New Year and Nunatsiavut Supplies Ltd. is confident that all work will be completed in January.

The 25 homeowners requiring single-walled tank repairs and certification before December 31, 2011 will not be impacted, as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has amended regulations extending the certification period for single-walled tanks to March 31, 2012. Double-bottomed tanks can be certified to August 31, 2012.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, included $1.5 million for an assistance plan for Inuit communities where homeowners face unique and difficult challenges associated with the registration of home heating oil tanks to meet compliance with Heating Oil Storage Tank Regulations.
