Nominations Encouraged for the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador

Today, the Honourable John Crosbie, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador and Chancellor of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, reminded the public that the deadline to nominate an individual for the prestigious Order of Newfoundland and Labrador is approaching.

“Every year we receive nominations for remarkable people who have realized extraordinary accomplishments and no doubt this year will prove to be the same,” said His Honour. “This year’s recipients of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador will join an impressive group of individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence in their various fields to the benefit of the province.”

The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador is the highest honour of the province. The object of the Order is to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour benefiting in an outstanding manner Newfoundland and Labrador and its residents. The first investiture took place in 2004.

“To be named to the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador is an honour bestowed on those whose professional and personal contributions enrich the lives of their fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians,” said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. “The commitment demonstrated by recipients of the Order is truly inspiring and integral to the prosperity of this province.”

The most recent recipients of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador inducted on September 13, 2011 were Melbourne Alton Best, Dr. Angus A. Bruneau, Sister Elizabeth Davis, Frances Elizabeth Ennis, Susan Green, Dr. Wayne Nesbit, Ches Penney, Lanier W. Phillips and Frances Vardy.

Nominations will be accepted until January 31, 2012. Any person or group may nominate an individual for recognition by the Order. The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador Advisory Council selects members to be invested into the Order after considering all nominations received.
