Hopedale Families Move Into New Homes
Three families in Hopedale are settling into their new homes through the combined efforts of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Nunatsiavut Government and the Hopedale Inuit Community Government.
“The Provincial Government is very pleased to have worked with the Inuit Community Government of Hopedale and the Nunatsiavut Government to provide the best solution in response to this very unique situation,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs. “This partnership has provided a new beginning for these families and we wish them well in their new homes.”
Funding for this project was provided by the Department of Municipal Affairs. “I am extremely pleased to know that the three families affected are now in their new homes,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “I wish these families well as they begin a new stage of their lives, and I thank the Nunatsiavut Government and the Inuit Community Government of Hopedale for their important efforts in this matter.”
The previous residences were found to have considerable structural deficiencies due to their location on a landfill from a former United States military site.
“I want to commend the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for recognizing the tremendous need for improved housing in Hopedale,” said Nunatsiavut’s First Minister Darryl Shiwak. “These new homes will enable these three families to move on with their lives, knowing that they can now live in comfort.”
The families moved into their new homes in the Berry Road subdivision a couple of weeks ago and residents throughout the community are very grateful that the needs of their neighbours have been met.
“The Inuit Community Government of Hopedale provided the building lots for the new homes,” said AngajukKâk Wayne Piercy. “The residents of Hopedale appreciate the contributions made by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Nunatsiavut Government to help improve the lives of these three Hopedale families.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, continues investments to improve the lives of Aboriginal people throughout the province. “Funding for the construction of these new homes is in addition to the $2.2 million allocated this year to support ongoing remediation efforts at the former military site in Hopedale,” said Minister McGrath. “The Provincial Government continues to work closely with the Nunatsiavut Government and the Hopedale Inuit Community Government throughout the remediation process.”
