Cabinet Retreat in Marystown Productive and Successful
The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and her Cabinet concluded two days of successful meetings today in Marystown.
"I am extremely pleased we were able to hold our Cabinet Retreat on the Burin Peninsula, the first time one has been held in this wonderful region of our province," said Premier Dunderdale. “We had two days of very productive meetings. We also had the opportunity to visit some different areas of the peninsula, where we were warmly welcomed. It is so important for government to be engaged with the people of the province and to be in tune with what matters to them. There is no better way to do that than to meet people where they live and work, which makes visits such as this one so valuable."
In addition to Cabinet meetings in Marystown and visits to Burin and Grand Bank, Premier Dunderdale was in St. Lawrence today to announce that the Provincial Government will provide a repayable contribution of $17 million to support Canada Fluorspar Inc. and its redevelopment plans for the St. Lawrence fluorspar mine. The investment will help create hundreds of new employment opportunities and bring an expected net economic impact of almost $380 million.
“It has been wonderful to have the Premier and members of Cabinet here on the Burin Peninsula,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and MHA for Grand Bank. “Our meetings, coupled with events in Burin and Grand Bank and today’s tremendous announcement in St. Lawrence, have resulted in a very successful visit to the region.”
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Burin - Placentia West was also pleased to have Premier Dunderdale and Cabinet visit the Burin Peninsula.
“It was very rewarding to have my Cabinet colleagues visit the region and see first-hand some of the facilities and sectors that impact the region’s economy,” said Minister Jackman. “This is the kind of opportunity that allows my colleagues to see first-hand what is happening in the region, and helps inform the discussions we have at the Cabinet table.”
Premier Dunderdale will also make an announcement tomorrow at the Marystown Town Hall at 9:00 a.m. The Premier will be joined by the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development; the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Burin - Placentia West; the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and MHA for Grand Bank; Sam Synard, Mayor of Marystown, and members of the business community.
