Corner Brook Woman Named Recipient
of Council of the Federation Literacy Award

Nancy Murphy of Corner Brook has been named the Newfoundland and Labrador recipient of the national Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

“I congratulate Ms. Murphy for being selected to receive this prestigious award, and for being an inspiration to adult learners who wish to further their education,” said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. “Her experience as both an adult learner, and an Adult Basic Education instructor, gives her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by people who, for whatever reason, have had their education interrupted. She is a true leader within the province’s adult literacy field and a most worthy recipient of this honour.”

Nancy Murphy left high school at age 15 to become a full-time parent. Seven years later, she enrolled in the provincial Adult Basic Education (ABE) program where she achieved high school equivalency. She then earned a Bachelor of Education degree and began working at the Dunfield Park Community Centre as a Homework Haven and Teen Haven teacher. In November 2010, Ms. Murphy was promoted to ABE Level I instructor.

“As an ABE student who went on to become an ABE instructor, Ms. Murphy is an exceptionally positive role model for her students,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. “She has proven through her own experience what can be achieved through perseverance and hard work. It is certainly fitting that this award be presented to an individual who has experienced the challenges of pursuing an adult education, and is now in a position to help others do the same.”

The Council of the Federation Literacy Award was established in 2004 to recognize outstanding achievements in literacy in provinces and territories throughout the country. The award is presented to an individual who by his or her skill, capability, education, position or accomplishment, has demonstrated leadership capabilities which have contributed to the advancement of adult literacy. This can be achieved through public awareness, teaching, program development, volunteer work, research or innovation that he or she has initiated, implemented or supported.
