Senior Appointments Announced

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced two senior appointments.

Ellen MacDonald has been appointed the Provincial Government’s new Chief Information Officer. Ms. MacDonald’s appointment is effective July 11.

Janet Vivian-Walsh has been appointed Assistant Deputy Minister (Primary, Elementary and Secondary) with the Department of Education. The appointment is effective August 8.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of these two accomplished individuals to senior management positions within our provincial public service,” said Premier Dunderdale. “I congratulate them both and wish them the very best in their new roles.”

Premier Dunderdale also thanked Jean Tilley for serving as Chief Information Officer in an acting capacity while the search for a new CIO was being conducted.

Biographical Information

Ellen MacDonald
Ellen MacDonald has held various positions within the information technology sector, most recently as Senior Manager – Customer Solutions Implementation, with Bell Aliant. For 12 years, she worked with xwave (formerly Newtel Information Systems) in various roles, including Delivery Director for Newfoundland and Labrador and the Ireland region. She also has 10 years of experience with Newtel Communications. Ms. MacDonald holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (Mathematics) from St. Francis Xavier University and is a certified Project Management Professional.

Janet Vivian-Walsh
With over 30 years of experience as both a teacher and an administrator, Janet Vivian-Walsh most recently held the position of Assistant Director of Education - Programs with the Eastern School District. She has had an extensive career in the field of education, including 12 years of teaching (Grades 7-13) and 18 years of experience in various school-based and district administrative positions. Ms. Vivian-Walsh holds a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree and a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) degree from Memorial University (MUN) and a Masters of Education (Educational Studies / Curriculum) from the University of Western Ontario. She has served on various committees at MUN’s Faculty of Education and is currently an executive member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Directors of Education.
