Provincial Government Supports Canadian Student Leadership Conference
“A Newfound Energy” will be the theme this fall as Corner Brook Regional High plays host to the 27th annual Canadian Student Leadership Conference (CSLC), to be held September 24 to October 2.
The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was at the school today to announce a Provincial Government contribution of $65,000 to conference organizers, which includes support from both the departments of Education ($50,000) and Human Resources, Labour and Employment ($15,000). Premier Dunderdale was accompanied by the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East; Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West; and Terry Loder, MHA for Bay of Islands.
“The Canadian Student Leadership Conference is a wonderful opportunity for young people from across the country, including our own students, to take part in workshops and activities which develop and promote leadership within their schools and communities,” said Premier Dunderdale. “The Provincial Government is proud to support this conference. In addition to providing participants with valuable educational and leadership experiences, it will also enable us to educate young Canadians about Newfoundland and Labrador, our culture and heritage, and our growing emergence as an economic powerhouse.”
“The recently redeveloped Corner Brook Regional High is a perfect venue to host this national gathering of some of the most accomplished high school students in the country,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. “And with more than 1,000 students and 250 teacher advisors from throughout Canada attending, this conference will allow us to showcase our own ‘newfound energy’ as a province, and as a people.”
“Creating a Province of Choice: A Youth Retention and Attraction Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador (2009), marked a bold, new partnership with the young people of the province and represents our government's commitment to ensure Newfoundland and Labrador's youth fulfil their potential for a bright and prosperous future,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Youth Engagement. “Providing our province's young people with support to attend and host conferences that focus on developing leadership, like the conference in Corner Brook this fall, has been a pillar of our overall strategy since its inception.”
Conference delegates will also take time to visit L’Anse aux Meadows, various attractions in Gros Morne National Park, Memorial University’s Marine Interpretation Centre, Marble Mountain, and more, during the nine-day event.
“The organization of this conference is truly a community undertaking,” said Minister Marshall. “It involves the 70 staff members at Corner Brook Regional High, its 900 students, as well as community leaders, volunteers and corporate sponsors who are all committed to developing the leadership capabilities of our youth. It is also an opportunity to showcase the City of Corner Brook and the entire region on the national stage.”
CSLC was established in 1985, and is coordinated by the Canadian Association of Student Activity Advisors. The last time Newfoundland and Labrador hosted the CSLC was in 2003, when it was held at Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John’s.
