Senior Appointment Announced

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced a senior appointment.

Julian McCarthy has been appointed Assistant Deputy Minister (Consumer and Commercial Affairs), Department of Government Services. Mr. McCarthy, has been Director of Pension Benefit Standards (Superintendent of Pensions) with the department since December 2009. He will continue in that capacity until a new person is appointed to the position.

“Mr. McCarthy brings extensive relevant experience and knowledge to his new position, and I wish him well,” said the Premier.

The appointment is effective today, April 12.

Biographical Information

Julian McCarthy
Julian McCarthy has been with the Provincial Government for almost 25 years. Most recently he was Director of Pension Benefit Standards (Superintendent of Pensions), Department of Government Services. His earlier positions with the department include Deputy Superintendent of Pensions and Manager of Pension Benefit Standards. He was also Credit Union Examination Supervisor with the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation. Prior to that, he worked in the Department of Finance in a variety of positions, including Crown Corporations Financial Officer, Pension Fund Financial Officer, and auditor. Mr. McCarthy has represented the province with the Canadian Association of Pension Supervisory Authorities for the past 10 years, and the Joint Forum of Market Regulators for the past five years.

Mr. McCarthy has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Memorial University, and has achieved fifth level of the Certified Management Accountant Program. He has also completed additional training, including the Frontline Leadership Program.
