Newfoundland and Labrador to Recognize and Honour
60 Years of Service of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador’s Lieutenant Governor, His Honour the Honourable John Crosbie, and the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that the province looks forward to observing the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s service to Canada and the Commonwealth in 2012.
“It is an honour and a privilege to mark sixty years of service to the British Commonwealth generally and to Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador,” said His Honour John Crosbie. “Her Majesty and members of her family have a long-standing historical link to this province that will no doubt endure and will be recognized during 2012.”
The 60th anniversary for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II falls on February 6, 2012, but celebrations and commemorations are expected to take place throughout the year nationally, as well as in all provinces and territories.
“Newfoundland and Labrador was delighted to host Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1997 for the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the voyage of John Cabot, Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall in November 2009,” said Premier Dunderdale. “The people of our province always show tremendous affection to members of the Royal Family, including so many of our youth who successfully participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program.”
More information on Newfoundland and Labrador’s observance of the anniversary will be available in the coming months.
