Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Forest Management District 21: Crown Five-Year Operating Plan (2012-2016)
Proponent: Department of Natural Resources (Reg. 1617)

The proponent has submitted a Five-Year Operating Plan for Forest Management District 21. This district is approximately 1.9 million hectares of boreal forest, situated on the south coast of Labrador. The area is bounded to the north by Hawke River, to the west by the Paradise and St. Pauls Rivers and the Quebec-Newfoundland and Labrador border, to the east and south by the Labrador coast. The proposed project will mainly involve harvesting, silviculture and road construction. Approximately 243,000 cubic metres of timber is schedule to be harvested in District 21 over the next five years. The project is proposing to construct 14 kilometres of primary access road as part of the operating plan.

The undertaking was registered on November 22, 2011; the deadline for public comments is December 27, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by January 6, 2012.

Forest Management District 22: Crown Five-Year Operating Plan (2012-2016)
Proponent: Department of Natural Resources (Reg. 1616)

The proponent has submitted a Five-Year Operating Plan for Forest Management District 22. District 22 is generally located in Western Labrador, bounded by the Quebec-Newfoundland and Labrador border in the west and Forest Management Districts 19b, 23 and 24 to the east and north. The five-year plan describes proposed forestry operations from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016 such as forest access road construction and decommissioning, proposed allocation of wood supply and forest harvesting, silviculture, forest protection, forest management research and monitoring and conservation activities. A total of approximately 38,890 cubic metres of timber is scheduled to be harvested by the proponent in District 22 over the next five years. New primary access road construction is expected to total 9.1 kilometres.

The undertaking was registered on November 22, 2011; the deadline for public comments is December 27, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by January 6, 2012.
