Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Forest Management District 1: Crown Five-Year Operating Plan (2012-2016)
Proponent: Department of Natural Resources (Reg. 1614)

The proponent has submitted a Five-Year Operating Plan for Forest Management District 1. District 1 consists of the Avalon Peninsula east of Come by Chance. The Five-Year Plan describes proposed forestry operations from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016 and includes forest access road construction and decommissioning, proposed allocation of wood supply and forest harvesting, silviculture, forest protection, forest management research and monitoring and conservation activities. Approximately 77,010 cubic metres of timber is scheduled to be harvested by the Crown in District 1 over the next five years. New primary access road construction is expected to total 17.4 kilometres with an additional 15.8 kilometres set to be decommissioned.

The undertaking was registered on November 15, 2011; the deadline for public comments is December 21, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by December 30, 2011.

Foxtrap Gravel Quarry (Reg. 1615)
Proponent: Murphy’s Services Inc.

The proposed project involves the development of an abandoned 5.5 hectare gravel quarry located on Incinerator Road, Foxtrap; within the municipal boundary of the Town of Conception Bay South. The proposed quarry will provide gravel and stone for the local market and will operate year round in accordance with demand for the product. The project is schedule to begin in April 2012.

The undertaking was registered on November 16, 2011; the deadline for public comments is December 21, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by December 31, 2011.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

Peter’s Pond Quarry on the Botwood Highway (Reg. 1605)
Proponent: Temple’s Backhoe Services Ltd.

Labrador Menihek Resources Sand Gravel Quarry (Reg. 1603)
Proponent: Labrador Menihek Resources Inc.

The project has been released from further environmental assessment review subject to the following condition:

COMPONENT STUDIES RECEIVED:

Labrador – Island Transmission Link
Proponent: Nalcor Energy (Reg. 1407)

The proponent has submitted the following two component studies as part of the ongoing environmental assessment for the project:

  1. Species of Special Conservation Concern Component Study
  2. Marine Environment and Effects Modelling Component Study

Public comments on the component studies must be received no later than December 19, 2011. The component studies are available on the Department of Environment and Conservation website at: www.gov.nl.ca/env/env_assessment/projects/Y2010/1407/index.html
