Hunting Season to Get Underway in Newfoundland and Labrador

Another hunting season is drawing near in Newfoundland and Labrador, with the big game firearm season in central and western regions of the island and Labrador opening on Saturday, September 10.

“We have tremendous hunting opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador, and responsible hunting and trapping practices are critical to the overall success of our province’s game and fur management programs,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation. “Hunters and trappers play an important part in the management of our wildlife resources and, in doing so, contribute to the long-term health and sustainability of our wildlife and wildlife habitat.”

The opening of the big game hunting season in Labrador does not pertain to George River caribou, as the season opening was delayed pending ongoing analysis of data that are continuously being collected, as well as a review of input from various stakeholders regarding the future management of the herd. The hunting seasons for the remaining big game management areas, along with small game, waterfowl hunting and trapping seasons, are also set to open in the coming weeks.

Hunters and trappers are reminded to keep safety first, particularly when using firearms. Additionally, all outdoor users should be prepared for an unexpected emergency situation such as becoming lost or having to deal with adverse weather conditions. A trip plan should be left with family members and should contain very specific details regarding the destination and return time.

Information on hunting seasons and bag limits is subject to change from year to year, and all hunters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the information contained in the 2011-12 Hunting and Trapping Guide located at www.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/hunting/hunttrap.pdf
