Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Labrador Menihek Resources Sand Gravel Quarry                   (Reg. 1603)
Proponent: Labrador Menihek Resources Inc.

The proposed project involves the development of a two-hectare sand and gravel quarry located approximately 15.5 kilometres east of the Town of Wabush and 1.7 kilometres south of Route 500, the Trans Labrador Highway. The site is accessed by the Trans Labrador Highway and by an existing dirt access road. The site is to be developed as an open pit quarry operation to produce granular material such as concrete aggregates, class A and B road materials and for the construction industry in western Labrador. There will be no blasting at this site. The quarry will potentially operate for six years depending on demand for the product.

The undertaking was registered on August 18, 2011; the deadline for public comments is September 22, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by October 1, 2011.

Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Training Facility                        (Reg. 1602)
Proponent: Maher Group of Companies Inc.

The proponent intends to establish a facility at the intersection of Routes 101 and 202 in Long Harbour to offer specialized training to pipe fitters. Trainees will be instructed in joining fiberglass reinforced polymer (frp) pipe sections using fiberglass and resins. The training program will operate for the duration of the construction phase at the Vale plant in Long Harbour, scheduled to be completed in February 2013.

The undertaking was registered on August 18, 2011; the deadline for public comments is September 22, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by October 1, 2011.

Proponent: Penney Holdings Ltd.

• The Agrifoods Branch of the Department of Natural Resources has determined the land base is unsuitable for the proposed use. Subsequently, a Crown Land title (Application No. 13755) will not be issued based on the above reason by the Lands Management Division, Department of Environment and Conservation.
