Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

R&B Butler’s Pit Quarry                                                      (Reg. 1590)
Proponent: R & B Equipment Ltd.

The proponent intends to develop a gravel and sand quarry two hectares in size, approximately 15 kilometres east of Wabush. The quarry is adjacent to existing quarries operating in the area and existing access roads will be used from Route 500. Material will be screened on site and the pit will operate from May until November, annually.

The undertaking was registered on June 23, 2011; the deadline for public comments is August 4, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by August 7, 2011.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

St. George’s Area Cranberry Farm                                       (Reg. 1576)
Proponent: Robert McFatridge

The above project was released from further environmental assessment, subject to the following condition:

The proponent must develop monitoring survey protocols in consultations with the Wildlife Division and Canadian Wildlife Service for waterfowl, other bird species, and for any species at risk that might be within the cranberry farm site area. The annual results of these monitoring surveys will be provided to, and discussed with the Wildlife Division and Canadian Wildlife Service. In addition, mitigation measures should be developed to reduce human-waterfowl interactions during construction and operation of the cranberry farm.
