Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
Bay de Verde Chitin Plant
Proponent: Quinlan Brothers Ltd.                                                      (Reg. 1577)

The proposal is to operate a chitin/chitosan production facility and laboratory in Bay de Verde. Waste material from shellfish processing will be used to manufacture chitin. The operation involves processing shellfish waste into a powder using potassium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and water. The existing shellfish processing plant in Bay de Verde will be expanded to accommodate the proposed chitin production facility. The facility will operate 24 hours/day for approximately eight months of the year, with a winter shutdown. Construction is expected to start in the fall of 2011.

The undertaking was registered on April 20, 2011; the deadline for public comments is May 25; and the minister's decision is due by June 4, 2011.

St. George’s Area Cranberry Farm                                                     (Reg. 1576)

Proponent: Robert McFatridge

The proponent proposes to develop a cranberry farm located approximately 2.2 kilometres east of the Route 490 turnoff to Stephenville Crossing in the St. George’s area. The proposed farm will be 40 hectares in size with 25 hectares used for cranberry production. Development of the cranberry farm will include: ditching and berms, water storage and sediment ponds, an onsite sand source, and access roads. Work is proposed to be carried out over a seven year period to fully develop all the cranberry fields starting with 3 hectares in the first year. Construction is planned to take place starting in August 2011.

The undertaking was registered on April 20, 2011; public comments are due by May 25, 2011; and, the Minister’s decision is due by June 4, 2011.

Deer Lake Pressure Treated Lumber Treatment Plant                            (Reg. 1575)
Proponent: Goodfellow Inc.

The proponent proposes to establish a facility to produce pressure treated lumber to market local businesses and consumers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The facility will be located in the Deer Lake Industrial Park, and will produce between five and eight million board feet of pressure treated lumber per year, using a variety of local and imported lumber materials. The proposed facility will include a single storey industrial building and associated storage yards for treated and untreated/white lumber. Construction of the proposed facility will begin upon issue of approvals, with an anticipated construction period of five months.

The undertaking was registered on April 20, 2011; the deadline for public comments is May 26, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by June 3, 2011.
