Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Tilt Cove Mine Dump Pile
Proponent: Rambler Metals and Mining Canada Ltd.
                         (Reg. 1559)

The proponent intends to excavate the Tilt Cove Mine Dump Pile located on the Baie Verte Peninsula which contains 48,000 tonnes of unconsolidated material. The material will be trucked 23 kilometres to Rambler’s hydrometallurgical gold mill and tailings facility, at Nugget Pond, to produce gold bars. The mining process will not entail excavation below the original topography of the Tilt Cove site. The project is scheduled to commence with excavation in June or July 2011 and will continue for eight to 12 weeks.

The undertaking was registered on February 15, 2011; the deadline for public comments is March 22, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by March 31, 2011.

Crown Districts 9 & 16 – Five-Year Operating Plan Amendment     (Reg. 1558)
Proponent: Forestry and Agrifoods Agency

This project details an amendment for two additional harvesting areas in the current Five- Year Operating Plan for Forestry Management Districts 9 and 16 near Hampden. The two areas in this amendment were recently transferred from Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited to the Crown. The amendment areas are located in District 9 (area adjacent to Hampden Highway) and in District 16 (Clam Pond). The timber from these two areas will be harvested by sawmillers and pulpwood contractors from the White Bay area with a potential annual harvest of approximately 11,000 cubic metres per year. Approximately four kilometres of primary access road will be constructed in the summer of 2011 to access timber for harvest in the early winter of 2012.

The undertaking was registered on February 11, 2011; the deadline for public comments is March 22, 2011; and the minister’s decision is due by March 28, 2011.
