Support Continues for Newspaper in Education Program

With an investment of $10,000, the Provincial Government is continuing its partnership with the Telegram this year to offer the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program to participating schools across Newfoundland and Labrador.

The NIE program provides copies of the Telegram to schools, free of charge, as a teaching and learning tool. Schools also have online access to editions of the Telegram and the Corner Brook-based Western Star.

“Incorporating newspapers into the school curriculum has many benefits,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “The Newspaper in Education program allows teachers to explore different teaching strategies in a wide range of subject areas, and helps students develop their critical-thinking skills and become better informed of events in their communities and around the world.”

Through the NIE program, paper copies of the Telegram are provided to participating schools and Adult Basic Education programs in the province, while 7,191 licences for the electronic edition are assigned to school districts. Teachers are provided with a selection of curriculum-related activity kits in subjects such as language arts, social studies, economics and mathematics.

“The support of the Department of Education has been integral to the growth of the NIE program” said Charles Stacey, Publisher and General Manager of the Telegram. “This year we will distribute over 535,000 printed newspapers to 182 schools and Adult Basic Education programs. With last fall’s launch of our SmartEdition electronic newspaper, a further initiative supported by the Department of Education, our newspaper is now available to every student and teacher in the province.”
