Labrador City School to Receive Electrical Upgrades

Le Centre éducatif L’ENVOL in Labrador City will soon see $521,000 in electrical upgrades as part of the Provincial Government’s ongoing investment in K-12 infrastructure throughout the province. Vision Electrical Ltd. of Corner Brook has been awarded the tender to complete the work.

“The Provincial Government has been systematically upgrading electrical systems in schools to ensure they can continue to support new and emerging technologies and remain safe, comfortable learning environments,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “Investments such as these extend the life of existing schools and enable them to continue to meet the needs of students and staff today, and well into the future.”

Minister Jackman noted this particular project is one of more than 130 electrical projects, totalling over $21 million, approved by the Provincial Government for existing schools in the past eight years. Work to be carried out at Le Centre éducatif L’ENVOL, a K-8 school, includes removal and replacement of exit and emergency lighting systems, a new fire alarm system, and various electrical upgrades.

“I am very pleased to see this investment made in le Centre educatif L’ENVOL in Labrador City on behalf of our government,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “This funding will improve the quality of infrastructure, providing a safer environment for our students and staff.”

Since 2004, Government has invested more than $1.1 million in renovations and upgrades to Le Centre éducatif L’ENVOL which include roofing, window and door replacements, and other repairs and improvements.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provided $94.5 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure projects, including $34.3 million for repairs and maintenance.

Over the past eight years, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $504 million for school infrastructure. Nine new schools have opened; five more are in various stages of planning or construction; 11 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and seven more are underway or in the planning stages.
