Tender Awarded for Electrical Upgrades to Port Rexton School

As part of the Provincial Government’s ongoing investment in K-12 infrastructure, Bishop White School in Port Rexton will soon see significant electrical upgrades valued at $477,600.

DWC Electrical Limited of St. John’s has been awarded the tender to complete the work, which includes the upgrading and replacement of all existing wiring, panel boards, receptacles and switches; additional wiring for new interactive whiteboards; the modification of stage lighting with new track lighting and programmable dimmer controls; upgrades to emergency lighting and exit signs, and a new fire alarm system.

“The Provincial Government has taken a systematic approach to updating electrical systems in schools to ensure our facilities continue to meet the demand of new and emerging technologies and enhanced programming, while remaining safe and comfortable teaching and learning environments,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. “These upgrades extend the life of existing school facilities, enabling them to continue to meet the needs of our students today and into the future.”

Minister Burke noted that about $1 million has been allocated for interior and exterior improvements to Bishop White since 2006. The school, which opened in 1960, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010.

“I am pleased with our government’s continued investment in our educational infrastructure,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity North. “Our youth are our future, and I take this opportunity to commend the Bishop White school council, the teachers, staff, parents and volunteers who work so hard each year to support the school and its students.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, provides $94.5 million for new and ongoing K-12 school infrastructure projects, including $34.3 million for repairs and maintenance.

Over the past eight years, more than $504 million has been approved for school infrastructure, a level of investment which is unprecedented in this province’s history. Seven new schools have opened, seven more are in various stages of construction, nine major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and nine more are underway or in the planning stages.
