Upgrades Totalling $177,000 Slated for Acreman Elementary

Acreman Elementary in Green’s Harbour will soon undergo $177,000 in upgrades, including a roof replacement and improvements to windows and stairs, following the recent awarding of a tender to Can-Am Platforms & Construction Limited.

“The Provincial Government is continuing its aggressive, yet systematic approach to providing upgrades, renovations and repairs to school infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. “These projects are designed to protect our investment in existing school facilities and to ensure students and staff will continue to enjoy safe, comfortable learning environments for many years to come.”

Since 2004, more than $504 million has been approved for school infrastructure. Seven new schools have opened, seven more are in various stages of construction, nine major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and nine more are underway or in the planning stages. A total of more than 1,500 infrastructure projects have been approved over that same time period, including roofing, windows, ventilation, electrical projects and more.

“The work that has been approved for Acreman Elementary will not only improve our school for the students and staff today, but it is also an investment into our children’s future,” said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Trinity-Bay de Verde. “Ensuring our children have a quality environment in which to learn is a priority of our government.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, provides $94.5 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure projects, including $34.3 million for repairs and maintenance.
