Tender Awarded for Electrical Upgrades to St. Peter’s Elementary

St. Peter’s Elementary in Upper Island Cove will soon see over $370,000 in electrical upgrades as part of the Provincial Government’s ongoing investment in K-12 infrastructure throughout the province. H.J. Bartlett Electric Inc. of Mount Pearl has been awarded the tender to complete the work.

“Over the past eight years, the Provincial Government has been systematically upgrading electrical systems in school facilities to ensure they can continue to support new and emerging technologies and remain safe, comfortable learning environments,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. “This particular project is one of more than 130 electrical projects approved for existing schools since 2004.”

Minister Burke noted that over $1.3 million has been allocated for improvements to St. Peter’s Elementary in recent years, including new roofing, windows, siding and exterior doors. The school is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, provides $94.5 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure projects, including $34.3 million for repairs and maintenance.

Over the past eight years, more than $504 million has been approved for school infrastructure, a level of investment which is unprecedented in this province’s history. Seven new schools have opened, seven more are in various stages of construction, nine major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and nine more are underway or in the planning stages.
