K-12 Schools to Benefit from New Technology Resources

Schools across Newfoundland and Labrador will be receiving 1,450 new computer systems and 272 interactive white boards, as a result of a $2 million Provincial Government investment.

“Enhancing learning through the use of modern technology is critical to ensure our students have the necessary skills to succeed in the 21st century,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. “The purchase of these new resources is another step in our continuing commitment to upgrade teaching and learning technology throughout the K-12 education system.”

There are currently 22,000 computers in the K-12 school system, with approximately 3,300 being at least five years old. Minister Burke noted this investment will enable schools to retire some of their aging computer equipment and to supplement their current inventories. The addition of 272 interactive white boards will bring the total in use across the province to almost 1,700, thereby increasing student access to this powerful learning resource.

“With technology evolving so rapidly it is important to replace aging equipment and provide our schools, and our students, with the modern technology they need to learn effectively in a 21st century environment,” said Minister Burke. “Providing these new resources will significantly improve access to current technology for thousands of our students and teachers in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Since 2006, the Provincial Government has invested about $5.4 million for the purchase of computers and interactive white boards.
