Renovation and Retrofit Work Continues on Social Housing Portfolio

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is continuing to improve its existing affordable social housing portfolio throughout the province through an investment of more than $400,000 for the upgrade of 60 units.

"I am pleased to announce this work, which will continue into 2011, will build upon the gains that we have been achieving throughout 2010, in modernizing and improving our housing portfolio in communities throughout the province," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. "This work is moving us forward toward achieving the goals of our Provincial Social Housing Plan, Secure Foundations."

A portion of this work is being carried out by NL Housing's own work force, and ranges from exterior painting to the replacement of roofing, windows, doors and siding. The homes are located in St. John's, North River and Spaniards Bay in Avalon Region; Gambo and Glovertown in Central Region; and, Deer Lake, Hampton, Ship Cove, Mainland, Lourdes, McIvers, Meadows, St. Andrew's, Maidstone and St. David's in Western Region.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador: Secure Foundations, released in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping to create healthier communities. In Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future , the Provincial Government is investing $27 million for housing infrastructure projects, affordable housing and increased maintenance funding. Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province's largest landlord with approximately 5,511 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
