Investments Keep Wheels Moving
Road work continues to roll out as the
Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works,
announced the latest tender call today. Several sections of roads in
Lewisporte and The Isles of Notre Dame will see upgrading and paving
work carried out as part of this year's Provincial Roads Improvement
Program.
"The Williams Government has maintained an aggressive campaign to see
road improvements made throughout the province," said Minister Hedderson.
"With each new construction season we push a little further towards the
completion of our goals. This latest tender will see upgrades to roads
that are critical to area residents and business owners, and gateways
for tourists discovering the wonders of Newfoundland and Labrador."
The tender calls for the pulverizing and paving of sections of road
leading to the town of Horwood, and the recapping of sections of road
leading into Roger's Cove.
The tender also calls for the pulverizing and paving of Cottlesville
Road, New World Island and Back Harbour Road, Twillingate. As well,
upgrading and paving will be completed on sections of Bayview Road,
Greenham's Point Road, Point Road and Hynes' Road in Twillingate.
"The benefits of upgraded and well-maintained roads go beyond just
improving the driving experience," said Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte.
"New pavement and smoother roads increase safety for everyone as they
make their way throughout the province. I am sure the residents of
Horwood and Rogers Cove will be very pleased to see the roads being
upgraded and paved in their area."
"These roads are important to residents and improving transportation
infrastructure will support the economic activity in the area," said
Derrick Dalley, MHA for The Isles of Notre Dame. "I am pleased with the
continued investment in our roads and I look forward to seeing this work
completed in the coming months for the benefit of residents and
visitors"
Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future
provides $177.7 million in Provincial Government funding for road and
bridge expenditures throughout the province. This funding will be
supplemented by an additional $57.9 million in Federal Government
funding for a total road and bridge investment of $235.6 million in
2010-11. The Provincial Government's overall infrastructure strategy
includes investments in municipalities, healthcare, education, justice,
social housing, transportation, and environment and conservation.
