Road Upgrades Dot the
West Coast
Motorists travelling throughout the
Humber Arm and Corner Brook areas will see new blacktop along stretches
of highway as another road tender has been called under this year's
Provincial Roads Improvement Program. Road upgrades and paving will take
place on sections of the Corner Brook Ring Road, Route 450 and Route
440.
"This tender call further demonstrates
this government's commitment to improving our roads throughout the
province," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation
and Works. "Each new section of pavement laid is another step towards
overall road improvement, highway safety and increased traffic to many
of our most beautiful destinations."
The tender is for the pulverizing,
widening and paving of the Corner Brook Ring Road from the Trans Canada
Highway to Wheelers Road and for the paving of sections of Route 450
from Mount Moriah to Lark Harbour. Also included is pulverizing and
paving work for sections of Route 440 from Gillams towards McIver's.
"Every year, the coming of spring and
summer signals the launch of another season of construction and road
work throughout the province," said the Honourable Danny Williams,
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Humber West. "The
improvements we are making to the Corner Brook Ring Road will help to
provide better access to the new Western Memorial Regional Hospital as
well as other major infrastructure that will serve the entire West Coast
region such as the new long-term care home and an expanded Sir Wilfred
Grenfell College."
"The sustained efforts and investments of
the Williams Government's roads program is being felt right across the
province," said Terry Loder, MHA for the Bay of Islands. "Residents and
tourists alike benefit from road improvements, whether they are
travelling near their homes or exploring the many hidden gems throughout
our province."
Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For
Our Children and Our Future provides $177.7 million in Provincial
Government funding for road and bridge expenditures throughout the
province. This funding will be supplemented by an additional $57.9
million in Federal Government funding for a total road and bridge
investment of $235.6 million in 2010-11.
