Provincial Government
Announces More Tenders for Highway Improvements
Drivers throughout the province continue
to see the benefits of the Williams Government's infrastructure
strategy. Tenders are being called for the construction of a new bridge
to replace the existing bridge over Middle Barachois River on the
Trans-Canada Highway and for the upgrading and repaving of sections of
Route 90 from Gaskiers to Holyrood Pond Bridge.
"Our roads and bridges are more than just
asphalt and concrete, they form an essential transportation network for
residents of our province," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister
of Transportation and Works. "This government's vision for continued
infrastructure improvement and roadway enhancement reaches across the
entire province as we make necessary investments that lead to safer and
more enjoyable driving conditions for all."
The tender for the new bridge over Middle
Barachois River involves the construction of a two-lane, two-span, 76
metre concrete girder bridge and approaches. This project is being
cost-shared 50/50 between the Provincial and Federal Governments under
the major infrastructure component of the federal Building Canada Fund.
The tender for Route 90 will require the
pulverizing, upgrading and repaving of a section of highway from
Gaskiers to Holyrood Pond Bridge. This project is being cost-shared
50/50 between the Provincial and Federal Governments under the federal
Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
"The continued improvement to our highway
system is always welcome," said the Honourable Joan Burke, MHA for St.
Georges-Stephenville East. "I am pleased to see this essential road
infrastructure development taking place. Replacing the bridge at Middle
Barachois River is vitally important and will offer residents of the
area and travelling motorists a safer driving experience."
"I am very pleased to see the upgrades
being made to Route 90," said the Honourable Felix Collins, MHA for
Placentia-St. Mary's. "As a part of the Irish Loop, many tourists travel
this section of road each year and it also serves as a main thoroughfare
for area residents. Improving safety for all drivers on our roads is
always a move in the right direction."
The maintenance and upgrading of highways
and infrastructure is one aspect of the Williams Government's overall
infrastructure program valued at more than $4 billion over the next
several years.
