Four New Accessible Units for Cashin-Froude
Redevelopment
The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of
Transportation and Works and Minister Responsible for
Housing (Housing), today announced a $639,000 contract
for Enercon Builders Inc. to construct four new
semi-detached social housing units on Vickers Avenue in
St. John's. The investment is part of an ongoing
$6-million redevelopment of the Cashin Avenue-Froude
Avenue neighbourhood whose properties are among the
oldest social housing in Canada.
"I am pleased to announce the construction of these
four new residential units on Vickers Avenue," said
Minister Hedderson. "I
have already heard of how the redevelopment of other
social housing properties in this neighbourhood has
benefited the lives of residents. This is another
example of the commitment that Housing and the Williams
Government have made to improve our province's housing
portfolio."
The four units will be contained in two adjacent
one-level buildings, each with one fully accessible unit
and one partially accessible unit with a regular
bathroom and kitchen. All of the units will have
flushed, easy-access 36-inch wide entrances, as opposed
to the standard 32-inch door width. The project will
include landscaping, tree planting and rebuilding
sidewalks and roadways. The anticipated completion date
for this project is September 2010.
"It
is truly heartening to see this redevelopment of the
Cashin-Froude neighbourhood move ahead at such a steady
pace," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, MHA for St.
John's Centre. "I am proud to be part of this government
which has put forward a vision and a plan to help this
social housing community and others throughout our
province reach their full potential."
This work is in keeping with the goals of the
Williams Government's Social Housing Plan for
Newfoundland and Labrador – Secure Foundations,
which outlines a new long-term vision for social housing
aimed at improving the housing circumstances of
lower-income households and helping to create healthier
communities.
