Winterland Playground to be Upgraded

The community playground in Winterland will see improvements, thanks in part to a $12,700 grant provided through the Provincial Governments 2010 Capital Grant Program.

"This funding will be used to assist with equipment purchase and upgrades to the playground," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The Provincial Government is committed to assisting community groups in their efforts to provide safe outdoor recreational environments which encourage young people to engage in more physical activity."

The Winterland Recreation Committee is among more than 40 municipalities, recreation commissions, and community-based organizations throughout the province which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

"I am delighted with todays funding announcement that will support the Winterland Recreation Committee in undertaking upgrades and purchasing new equipment for their playground," said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education and MHA for Grand Bank. "I have been working with the volunteers of this committee to identify opportunities that can support the playground upgrades, so I am very pleased that our government is providing this funding."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Governments recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and equipment.
