Provincial Government and Sport NL Name Games Coordinator

The Provincial Government, in partnership with Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (Sport NL), today announced that Glenn Smith has been named Games Coordinator of the Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada Games programs, a newly-created position within Sport NL.

"The Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada Games programs provide our athletes with an opportunity to compete at the highest levels and pursue their goals of achieving athletic excellence," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "One of the recommendations of the Provincial Government�s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy, Newfoundland and Labrador, is that government collaborate more with provincial sports agencies on the delivery of provincial programming. We are therefore delighted to partner with Sport NL on this initiative and we look forward to further partnerships in the future."

As Games Coordinator, Mr. Smith will be responsible for the continued development and coordination of the games programs, as well as to work with provincial sport organizations and all levels of government to achieve the goals, objectives and expected outcomes set by the Games Advisory Board and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. He will also provide support and assistance to Team Newfoundland and Labrador in preparation for future Canada Games.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments � For Our Children and Our Future provides over $1.2 million in new funding � including an additional $350,000 for the Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada Games programs � to improve existing recreation and sport programming and to introduce new initiatives. Since the launch of the strategy in 2007, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure and programming.

Biographical Information

Glenn Smith, Games Coordinator, Sport NL

Glenn Smith has a professional background in business and an extensive portfolio in sport management and communication. A graduate of Memorial University�s Bachelor of Commerce program, Mr. Smith has held sales and marketing positions with Texaco, Petro-Canada and Coca-Cola.

For the past two years, he has worked as the Provincial Sport Organization Administrative Coordinator with Sport NL. In this role, he has assisted several sports groups with membership administration, funding applications, strategic planning, event management, website development and maintenance, and communication solutions.

Very active in the triathlon and running community, as both an athlete and an organizer, Mr. Smith participates in many events throughout the year, and serves on the organizing committees for several Newfoundland and Labrador Athletic Association road races including the Huffin Puffin Marathon, and the St. John�s Triathlon and Kids of Steel.
