Deer Lake Receives
Capital Grant Support
For Off-Street Skateboard/BMX Bike Park
Young people in the Town of Deer Lake and
surrounding areas will soon have a BMX bike and skateboarding park,
thanks in part to $15,000 from the Provincial Governments 2010 Capital
Grant Program.
In consultations with the youth of the
area, the Deer Lake Recreation Committee found that young people wanted
an outdoor, off-street facility specifically designed to provide a safe
environment in which to engage in outdoor skateboarding and BMX bike
activities, said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation. This facility will provide a venue for young
people to engage in physical activity and improve their skill levels in
a sport that is rapidly growing in popularity.
Deer Lake is among more than 40
municipalities, recreation commissions, and community-based
organizations throughout the province which have received funding to
upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest
Capital Grant Program investments.
I am so pleased with this announcement,
and the youth will be ecstatic given that it will provide them with yet
another option for outdoor fun and recreation, said Humber Valley MHA
Darryl Kelly. This is certainly an activity of great interest to them
and will provide access to hours of enjoyment and enhance their social
and physical well-being.
