Museum Association Operations Supported Through
$100,000 Provincial Government Investment

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANL) has received $100,000 in operational support through the Provincial Government's Cultural Economic Development Plan (CEDP) to assist in its efforts to deliver programs and services to community-based museums throughout the province.

"Preserving and maintaining our community museums is vital to the safeguarding of our history and heritage," said Minister French. "These are places where local history is preserved, presented and celebrated, and where visitors and residents alike can learn more about what makes each community in Newfoundland and Labrador unique, while at the same time contributing to our collective history as a place and as a people."

MANL is a not-for-profit charitable organization representing museums, heritage organizations, and individuals in the preservation and promotion of the province's material and cultural heritage.

"The operational support provided through the Cultural Economic Development Program is an essential piece in the sustainability of the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Teresita McCarthy, president of MANL. "We applaud the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation for the efforts that have been made to work in partnership with the Museum Association, and other members of the heritage sector, to enhance the delivery of this program."

MANL was incorporated in 1980 under the leadership of a volunteer board of directors, representative of the museum and heritage community in the province. Since 1980, MANL has grown to include over 150 member museums and heritage societies and 115 individual members. For further information visit: www.manl.nf.ca.

The 2010 CEDP program is providing about $1.2 million to the professional arts sector and $1.27 million to the heritage sector, for a total of almost $2.5 million.

CEDP applications are considered based on the strength of the business plans, vision and potential for development within the sector. For more information on the CEDP program for the heritage sector, as well as application guidelines, visit: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/heritage/cedp/index.html
