More than $144,300 in Additional Funding
Invested in Provincial Recreation Programming
The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation, today announced that an additional 38 municipalities and
recreation organizations throughout the province have received a total
of $114,345 through the Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG)
Program. This funding is in addition to regional CRDG funding announced
over the past several weeks.
"An investment in recreational programming is an investment in the
present and future health and well-being of our citizens," said Minister
French. "One of the main objectives of the Provincial Government's
recreation and sport strategy,
Active, Healthy Newfoundland and
Labrador
, is to increase participation in recreation, sport and
physical activity. By offering our support to local recreation and sport
committees that promote and encourage residents to get physically
active, we are working together to achieve that goal."
A complete list of the most recent funding recipients can be viewed
in the backgrounder below.
The 2010 CRDG program is providing more than $576,000 to over 180
smaller communities with populations of 6,000 or fewer throughout
Newfoundland and Labrador. Applications are considered based on their
alignment with the priorities outlined in the province's recreation and
sport strategy, such as providing increased access to programming for
all residents; making the best use of community facilities; building
community capacities, and promoting the inclusion of traditionally
under-represented groups, especially women and girls, seniors,
Aboriginal people, and those with disabilities.

application, visit:

Budget 2010:
The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our
Future
provides approximately $7 million, including over $1.2
million in new funding, to improve existing recreation and sport
programming and to introduce new initiatives. Since the launch of the
strategy in 2007, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding
has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure,
programming, and athlete development.
