The Signal Hill Tattoo, an internationally-known,
award-winning historical animation program, which portrays the life and
duties of the British infantry soldier in the mid 1800s, celebrated the
end of a successful season last night (Monday, August 16) with a banquet
at the Delta Hotel in St. John's.
"The Signal Hill Tattoo has a long-standing tradition
of entertaining and educating provincial, national and international
visitors to the Signal Hill National Historic Site in St. John's," said
the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation, who attended the banquet. "The Provincial Government is
pleased to support the activities of the Tattoo, as they align with our
effort to preserve and promote our history and cultural heritage, while
also adding value to our visitors' experience."
The Provincial Government has invested $53,280 in the
Signal Hill Tattoo this year; $46,280 in operational support through the
Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP), and an additional $7,000
for programming through Provincial Historic Sites.
The Signal Hill Tattoo has won numerous awards
including the coveted Canadian Heritage Award, the City of St. John's
Tourism Event of the Year Award, and the Historic Sites Association of
Newfoundland and Labrador Manning Award.
Performed on O'Flaherty Field on the Signal Hill
National Historic Site, the Signal Hill Tattoo runs from July 1 until
mid-August.
