Placentia-St. Mary's Region Receives
Over $25,400 Investment in Recreation Programs

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that municipalities and recreation committees in the Placentia-St. Mary's area have received a total of $25,410 through the Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) Program.

"The benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle are well-documented," said Minister French. "The Community Recreation Development Grant Program is designed to help offset the cost of delivering recreation and active-living programs which help contribute to the overall well-being of residents in small, rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

The 2010 CRDG Program is providing more than $576,000 to more than 180 smaller communities in the province.

Investments in the Placentia-St. Mary's area are as follows:

  • Town of Placentia — $5,005;
  • Town of Colinet — $4,565;
  • Town of Long Harbour-Mt. Arlington Heights — $3,850;
  • St. Mary's Recreation Committee — $3,355;
  • Point Lance Recreation Committee — $2,365;
  • Branch Recreation Committee — $2,310;
  • Mall Bay Recreation Committee — $2,200; and,
  • Cuslett Recreation Committee — $1,760.

"These grants are extremely important to our communities," said the Honourable Felix Collins, MHA for Placentia-St. Mary's. "They make it possible to provide recreational and healthy living situations for people of all ages."

Community Recreation Development Grants are available to communities with a population of 6,000 or less. Applications are considered based on their alignment with the priorities outlined in the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). These priorities include providing increased access to programming for all residents; making the best use of community facilities; building community capacities; and, promoting the inclusion of traditionally under-represented groups, especially women and girls, seniors, Aboriginal people, and those with disabilities.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides over $1.2 million in new funding to improve existing programming and introduce new initiatives which support the goals of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador. Since the launch of the strategy, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development.
