Over $25,600 Invested in Harbour Main Area Recreation

Seven community-based recreation programs in the Harbour Main area have received a total of $25,630 in support through the Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) Program, which helps offset the cost of delivering recreation and active-living programs to residents in small communities throughout the province.

"An investment in recreation programs pays dividends in terms of the health and well-being of our citizens," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "This is one part of the Provincial Government's effort to support municipalities and recreation committees, particularly those in rural areas, which encourage residents to live more active, healthy lifestyles."

The 2010 Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) program is providing more than $576,000 to over 180 smaller communities.

Investments in the Harbour Main area are as follows:

  • Town of Holyrood — $5,280;
  • Town of Avondale — $5,005;
  • Town of Brigus — $3,795;
  • Town of Harbour Main-Chapel's Cove-Lakeview — $3,740;
  • Marysvale Recreation Committee — $3,685;
  • Conception Harbour Recreation Committee — $2,530; and,
  • Town of Cupids — $1,595.

"I am very pleased that communities and recreation committees in the region have been able to avail of this funding," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, MHA for Harbour Main. "This support will enable communities to develop and sustain their recreation programs, promote physical activity, and help strengthen community bonds."

Community Recreation Development Grants are available to communities with a population of 6,000 or less. Applications are considered based on their alignment with the priorities outlined in the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). These priorities include providing increased access to programming for all residents; making the best use of community facilities; building community capacities; and, promoting the inclusion of traditionally under-represented groups, especially women and girls, seniors, Aboriginal people, and those with disabilities.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides over $1.2 million in new funding to improve existing recreation and sport programming and introduce new initiatives. Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development.
