Provincial Government
Invests $200,000 to Support Three Hockey Canada Events
The Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador has invested $200,000 in support of three Hockey Canada events
being held in the province over the next nine months. The Honourable
Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, made the
announcement today at a news conference held at Mile One Centre in St.
John's.
Beginning today, and throughout the
weekend, the top 45 under-20 male hockey players in the country will
participate in Hockey Canada's National Junior Team Development Camp,
taking place at Mile One Stadium. In addition, the 2010 4 Nations Cup, a
tournament featuring some of the world's best female players will take
place from November 9-13 and, from April 18-24, the province will play
host to the 2011 TELUS Cup National Midget Hockey Tournament.
"By supporting these elite sporting
events, the Provincial Government is heightening the awareness of the
benefits of sport participation and the pursuit of athletic excellence,"
said Minister French. "Through this investment, there is an increased
opportunity for residents, particularly our young, up-and-coming
athletes, to witness first-hand the incredible talent of some of the
country's best young male and female hockey players."
The events are being held in the province
to recognize the 75th anniversary of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador,
one of Hockey Canada's 13 branches across the country.
"We're honoured to help Hockey
Newfoundland and Labrador celebrate its 75th anniversary by bringing
these three prestigious events to the province," said Bob Nicholson,
President and CEO of Hockey Canada. "Newfoundland and Labrador is
already a province rich in hockey heritage, and this week's National
Junior Team Development Camp, along with November's 4 Nations Cup and
next year's TELUS Cup, will build on that strong tradition and create
lifelong memories for players and fans alike."
Gerry Evans, President of Hockey
Newfoundland and Labrador, said the Provincial Government investment
helped ensure these events could be hosted in the province.
"We are really excited about having these
three major hockey events in our province," said Mr. Evans. "The
Provincial Government has been a long-time supporter of our association,
and this announcement only further illustrates how they recognize the
need to support amateur hockey."
