Province Well Represented at Canadian
Small Bore Nationals,
Winning Three Medals and National Team Spots
Four provincial shooting athletes, Brenda Greene (St.
Joseph's, SMB), Dave Woolridge (St. John's), Ben Taylor (St. John's) and
Dave Ficken (St. John's), competed at the 2010 Canadian National Small
Bore Championships in Beachburg, Ontario. Shooting conditions were
highly taxing on the competitors as the match was shot during a weeklong
heat advisory. With the average temperature hovering around 33 degrees
and the humidex over 40 degrees, all athletes were pushed to their
limits to maintain their mental and physical endurance. Shooters taking
part in the three position event had to contend with the hottest weather
and the heaviest rain of the week. At one point the competition was
almost canceled due to rain. In shooting, weather related cancellations
are very rare. Fortunately for Brenda Greene this was adverted and she
went on to earn another spot on the SFC National team and CISM team.
This was Dave Woolridge's 10th National Championship but the
1st for Brenda Greene, Ben Taylor and Dave Ficken.
Brenda Greene achieved many milestones at the competition. She earned a
position on the Shooting Federation of Canada's Women's Developmental
10-metre Air Rifle and 50-metre 3 X 20 team. In addition to this she
qualified for the DND Women's CISM team and will have an opportunity to
represent Canada at the CISM World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
Also, she claimed two medals, a gold for Women's Expert in air rifle and
a silver in the Women's Expert 50-metre prone event. Her overall finish
in air rifle was 5th, 6th in 3 X 20 and 2nd
in the prone event. Finally, she set a new provincial record in air
rifle with a single relay score of 390 / 400 points.
Dave Woolridge shot the 10-metre Air Rifle and
50-metre 3 X 40. He fired 1135 out of 1200 finishing 8th in
the Master class for air rifle and 2148 out of 2400 to finish 5th
in the men's 50-metre Expert class.
Ben Taylor and Dave Ficken shot the 10-metre Air Rifle
event. Taylor scored 1105 / 1200 to finish 7th in the Expert
class and 6th in the International Junior event. Dave Ficken
scored 1024 /1200 to earn the Gold medal for the Men's Sharpshooter
class.
Finally, for the first time in over 10 years the
province was able to field a men's team in 10-metre Air Rifle.
Collectively Woolridge, Taylor and Ficken scored 3264 to finish 6th
in the overall standings.
