The Torbay Museum/Heritage Committee has received a
total of $17,260 in operational and project funding through the
province's Cultural Economic Development Program.
"This funding will support the Torbay Museum/Heritage
Committee in its day-to-day operations, as well as enable the
organization to undertake an innovative project whereby oral histories
are collected and made accessible in the community through "memory
pods", which will allow visitors to use their cell phones to hear
stories, songs and histories about the place where they are standing,"
said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation. "The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to
support organizations in their efforts to preserve and present the
heritage of their respective regions in ways which make use of new
technologies, and which engage residents and visitors alike."
Kevin Parsons, MHA for the District of Cape St.
Francis, welcomed the investment.
"Some of Newfoundland and Labrador's most interesting
history has been passed on through word of mouth," said Mr. Parsons.
"With this progressive use of technology, our wonderful past is being
brought into the present for all to share and enjoy."
The 2010 Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP)
is providing $1.27 million for operational and project support to the
heritage sector, and about $1.2 million to the professional arts sector,
for a total of almost $2.5 million.
CEDP applications are considered based on the strength
of business plans, vision and potential for development within the
sector. For more information on the CEDP program and application
guidelines, visit:
