A recreational facility in Stag Harbour, which has been inoperable
for several years, is getting a new lease on life, thanks in part to the
provision of $10,500 from the Provincial Government's Community Capital
Grant Program (CCGP).
"The outdoor rink, once a social hub within the
community, had fallen into disrepair, and we were pleased to be able to
help get it back in working order," said the Honourable Terry French,
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "A facility such as this
can serve as an integral component of outdoor physical, recreational and
social activities in a community."
Stag Harbour is among more than 30 communities
throughout the province which have received funding to purchase
equipment and upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through
the most recent allocation of $450,900 through the CCGP.
"I am pleased that we are able to support Stag Harbour
in its efforts to increase recreational activity in the community," said
Derrick Dalley, MHA for the Isles of Notre Dame. "Funding to improve
recreational facilities will increase participation, enhance the health
and wellness of residents, and motivate volunteers to continue their
commitment to making a difference."
The CCGP is an application-based program that provides grants of up
to $15,000 to assist community-based recreation organizations to improve
their recreation and sports infrastructures.
Budget 2010:
The Right Investments — For Our
Children and Our Future
provides an additional $300,000 to the CCGP,
bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million.
Since the introduction of the Provincial Government's recreation and
sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007),
more than $62.4 million in new funding has been committed for recreation
and sport infrastructure and equipment.
