Province Supports
Efforts of Bell Island Heritage Society
The Bell Island Heritage Society has
received $16,760 through the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP)
in support of its efforts to preserve and promote the unique history of
the island for residents and visitors alike.
"Bell Island has a storied background,
none more interesting than that of the famous iron ore mines," said the
Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
"The Bell Island Miners Museum is a must-see, followed by a tour of Mine
No. 2, which is situated under the museum and extends beneath the ocean
floor. A tour of the island's painted murals, erected on various
buildings on the island, and the interpreted history of Second World War
activity off its shores, makes a visit to Bell Island a truly memorable
experience."
The Honourable Dianne Whalen, MHA for
Conception Bay East and Bell Island, welcomed the continued support.
"Bell Island has a wonderful story to
tell and this investment will support the heritage society and the
important work it does to promote the history of Bell Island," said
Minister Whalen. "I am delighted that the funding will contribute to
their efforts to highlight the culture and uniqueness of the area."
The 2010 CEDP is providing $1.27 million
for operational and project support to the heritage sector, and about
$1.2 million to the professional arts sector, for a total of almost $2.5
million.
CEDP projects are selected based on the
strength of the business plans, vision and potential for development
within the sector. For more information on the CEDP program and
application guidelines, visit:
