Theatre Festival Receives Increased Operational Support
Residents and visitors alike will once again be
entertained at the upcoming Stephenville Theatre Festival, due in part
to a $30,000 investment through the Provincial Government's 2010
Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).
"Celebrating its 31st anniversary this year, the Stephenville Theatre
Festival is the longest-running theatre festival in Newfoundland and
Labrador," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation. "The Provincial Government's continued
commitment to this festival is reflected in the fact we have increased
our support by $5,000 this year. I encourage everyone to get out and
witness first-hand the incredible talent and professionalism of the
company."
This year's festival opens July 11 and runs until August 22.
"The Stephenville Theatre Festival is one of the many reasons to visit
the Bay St. George area this summer," said the Honourable Joan Burke,
MHA for St. George's-Stephenville East. "Each year, this event attracts
many visitors and I am pleased to see our Provincial Government is
continuing to support such a fine showcase of the talent we have in our
province."
"The Stephenville Theatre Festival has survived for many reasons, but
mainly because it is a community project — created by, for, and with,
the people here at home," said Michael Dawson, Chair of the Stephenville
Theatre Festival Board of Directors. "There have been many challenges
over the years, but thanks to the financial and moral support of those
who believe in good theatre, the festival is still here and stronger
than ever."
Professional theatre festivals in Newfoundland and
Labrador have been provided $255,000 in operational funding through the
cultural component of the CEDP program — a $25,000 increase over 2009
funding levels.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future
provides approximately $2.5 million to support arts, cultural and
heritage initiatives throughout the province, with almost $1.2 million
earmarked for the arts and culture sectors. Since the launch of the
province's cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador in
2006, the Provincial Government has invested more than $28 million into
the arts and culture sectors.
CEDP applications are considered based on the strength
of the business plans, vision, and potential development within the
sector. For more information on the CEDP program and application
