Stephenville Dome Receives $15,000 for Flooring Upgrades, Equipment Repairs

The Town of Stephenville has been provided with $15,000 from the Community Capital Grant Program to assist with renovations to its stadium floor and repairs to its ice refrigeration system.

"The Stephenville Dome requires upgrades to the floors surrounding the exterior of the rink, and repairs to its ice refrigeration system to ensure residents have maximum access to sport and recreation programming," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "This investment will help provide area residents with increased opportunities to take part in physical activities in a safer, more inviting environment."

Stephenville is among more than 30 communities throughout the province which has received funding to purchase equipment and upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through the most recent allocation of $450,900 through the Community Capital Grant Program.

"The Stephenville Dome is a very important piece of infrastructure that serves many people of the Bay St. George region," said the Honourable Joan Burke, MHA for St. George's-Stephenville East. "I am pleased to see that with our Provincial Government's commitment, the building will receive the required maintenance and continue to provide and promote health activity to residents of all ages."

The Community Capital Grant Program is an application-based program that provides funding of up to $15,000 to municipalities and recreation commissions to improve their recreation and sports infrastructure.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and equipment throughout the province.
