Placentia Softball Field Granted $15,000 for Upgrades

The William P. Hogan Softball field in Placentia, considered by many to be one of the best in Atlantic Canada, is getting a $15,000 upgrade through the Community Capital Grant Program.

"The William P. Hogan Softball Field will get upgrades to its fencing, a scoring booth, and an equipment storage area," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "This field is a tremendous asset to the community, and we are pleased to be able to provide support for a facility which promotes well-organized recreation and sport programming to residents of Placentia and surrounding areas."

Placentia is among more than 30 communities throughout the province which will receive funding to purchase equipment and upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure with the most recent allocation of $450,900 through the Community Capital Grant Program.

"The Placentia area has long been a hub for softball in this province, and this field has certainly enhanced that reputation," said the Honourable Felix Collins, MHA for Placentia-St. Mary's. "These improvements will help ensure that it remains one of the top-notch facilities in Atlantic Canada."

The Community Capital Grant Program is an application-based program that provides grants of up to $15,000 to help municipalities and recreation commissions to improve their recreation and sports infrastructure.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and equipment throughout the province.
