Point Leamington Receives $11,100 for Recreational Infrastructure

The Town of Point Leamington will receive $11,100 from the Community Capital Grant program to support enhancements to its recreational infrastructure.

"The upgrades will include improvements to the local community park, renovations to a bandstand and performance area, and the purchase of new playground equipment," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "Providing a safer, more pleasant environment in which residents can engage in physical activity will no doubt encourage people of all ages to participate in healthy outdoor activities on a more regular basis."

Point Leamington is among more than 30 communities throughout the province which will receive funding to purchase equipment and upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure with the most recent allocation of $450,900 through the Community Capital Grant Program.

"Providing safe, attractive recreational spaces for our residents certainly adds to their desire to participate in physical activity," said Exploits MHA Clayton Forsey. "With this grant, the Town of Point Leamington will be able to enhance its recreational infrastructure for the use and enjoyment of the community, promoting more active lifestyles for individuals of all ages."

The Community Capital Grant Program is an application-based program that provides funding to assist municipalities and recreation commissions to improve their recreation and sports infrastructure.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and equipment throughout the province.
