The Jean Lake Trail in Wabush will be upgraded with
the help of a $15,000 grant provided through the Community Capital Grant
Program.
"This funding will be used to repair bridges, widen
sections of the trail, and generally upgrade this five-kilometre
wilderness trail for the safety and enjoyment of area residents and
visitors alike," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation. "Walking trails enable people of all ages to
benefit from opportunities to increase their daily fitness regimens, and
we are pleased to be able to provide support for this worthwhile
project."
Wabush is among more than 30 communities throughout
the province which will receive funding to purchase equipment and
upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through the most
recent allocation of $450,900 through the Community Capital Grant
Program.
"The scenic Jean Lake wilderness trail is widely used
and one of the most popular trails for the many fitness enthusiasts in
Labrador West," said Jim Baker, MHA for Labrador West. "The upgrades
made possible by this grant will make this trail more accessible and
safer for an increased number of individuals especially our seniors, and
I applaud our government for its commitment to the physical well-being
of residents."
The Community Capital Grant Program is an
application-based program that provides funding of up to $15,000 to
assist municipalities and recreation commissions to improve their
recreation and sports infrastructure.
Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our
Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the
Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in
this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial
Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy
Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new
funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and
equipment throughout the province.
