Jackson's Arm Recreation Committee Provided Over $14,000 for Rink Repairs

The outdoor rink in Jackson's Arm is getting a face lift. The Jackson's Arm Recreation Committee is being provided $14,800 through the Community Capital Grant Program to help with reconstruction and repairs. The community rink is used throughout the winter for ice hockey, general skating and broomball, and during the summer months for soccer.

"This facility will operate year-round and be an integral component of outdoor physical, recreational and social activities in the community," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The necessary repairs will no doubt encourage more area residents, especially children and youth, to participate in healthy outdoor activities."

Jackson's Arm is among more than 30 communities throughout the province which will receive funding to purchase equipment and upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through the most recent allocation of $450,900 through the Community Capital Grant Program.

"I am delighted that Jackson's Arm and its residents will benefit from this funding program," said Humber Valley MHA Darryl Kelly. "This much-needed work will not only improve their recreation infrastructure, but will assist in promoting increased participation within the community."

The Community Capital Grant Program is an application-based program that provides funding of up to $15,000 to assist municipalities and recreation commissions to improve their recreation and sports infrastructures.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and equipment.
