March 30, 2010Minister Encourages Support for
Bishop's Falls
in Effort to be Named Hockeyville 2010
For the third consecutive year, a Newfoundland and Labrador town has
been named a top five finalist in the annual Kraft Hockeyville
competition — and this time the honour goes to Bishop's Falls. The
announcement was made Saturday night, March 27, during CBC's Hockey
Night in Canada broadcast.
The Honourable Terry French, Minster of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation, today congratulated the Town of Bishop's Falls, and
encouraged all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, at home and abroad, to
show their support for the town in its effort to bring home the
Hockeyville title in 2010. The province has managed to score well in the
competition in the past. The Town of Harbour Grace was a top five
finalist in 2009, while the town of Port aux Basques made it to the
final round in 2008.
"People in the Town of Bishop's Falls and surrounding areas have put
forward a tremendous effort to encourage people to register a vote and
show the country that this community deserves to be named Hockeyville
2010," said Minister French. "Those efforts have clearly paid off. The
$25,000 prize awarded for placement as one of five finalists from
throughout Canada will no doubt be put to good use at the Pat O'Reilly
Memorial Stadium, and will benefit all those who participate in
recreation and sport activities there. But we still have one final round
of voting to go."
Bishop's Falls is now eligible for the final round of voting. To

The deadline is tomorrow, March 31, at 11:59 p.m., Eastern Time (or
April 1, 1:29 a.m. in Newfoundland and 12:59 a.m. in Labrador). The
winner will be named Hockeyville 2010 and be awarded $100,000 to be used
for upgrading the local arena, along with an opportunity to host an NHL
pre-season game and a CBC Hockey Night in Canada broadcast.
"I am absolutely delighted that Bishop's Falls has made the top
five," said Exploits MHA Clayton Forsey. "I want to recognize and
congratulate the organizing committee for all of their time and effort,
as well as the residents, their families and friends. Now, Bishop's
Falls needs all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to rally behind them
and show their support in this quest."
On April 3, Hockey Night in Canada will broadcast from Bishop's Falls
and the other five finalist communities — Cranbrook, B.C., Stanstead,
Que., Dundas, Ont., and Lawrencetown, N.S. At the end of the show, the
winning community will be named.
The Kraft Hockeyville competition searches for the Canadian community
that best embodies the spirit of hockey and hometown pride. It is
sponsored by Kraft Canada, together with the CBC, the National Hockey
League (NHL), and the NHL Players' Association.
