Awards
Recognize Contributions to Tourism
The Honourable Terry
French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation,
today presented two awards, the Cultural Tourism Award
and the Doug Wheeler Award, to leaders in the province's
tourism and cultural tourism sectors. The presentations
took place in Gander, during Hospitality Newfoundland
and Labrador (HNL) Lookout! Tourism Summit, the industry
association's 27th annual conference and trade show.
McCarthy's Party is this
year's recipient of the Cultural Tourism Award,
presented annually by the Department of Tourism, Culture
and Recreation, in partnership with the Department of
Canadian Heritage and Hospitality Newfoundland and
Labrador.
"Cultural tourism is the
offering of an experience that includes a region's
culture, heritage, and lifestyle, and this award
recognizes efforts which result in a traveller having
that enriched experience," said Minister French.
"McCarthy's Party is certainly an appropriate choice, as
the company specializes in delivering tours of
Newfoundland and Labrador which encourage total
immersion in everything the province has to offer, from
talking to fishermen, to enjoying local festivals and
community teas, to whale watching and iceberg viewing."
The Doug Wheeler Award is
presented each year to honour the long-time provincial
public servant, who passed away in 1981. The award
commemorates his early efforts to promote Newfoundland
and Labrador as a tourism destination, and recognizes
outstanding contributions to the tourism sector.
Minister French presented
this year's Doug Wheeler Award to Mayor Jim Miller of
Trinity, a dedicated proponent of cultural heritage and
tourism development.
"Mayor Miller has worked
hard to develop partnerships with neighbouring
communities which have resulted in economic benefits to
the entire region." said Minister French. "He has
encouraged the further development of some outstanding
tourism attractions, such as the Skerwink Trail, and as
general manager of the Trinity Historical Society, and
mayor of his community, he has been wholly dedicated to
upholding the town's built heritage standards, which has
made a visit to Trinity a truly unique visitor
experience."
This year's Doug Wheeler
Award was accompanied by a soapstone and alabaster
carving by Happy Valley-Goose Bay artist David Terriak,
entitled Strong Silent Type.
