Minister Joins Heritage Foundation to Celebrate Heritage
Day
The Honourable Terry
French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation,
joined the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and
Labrador (HFNL) and members of the heritage community at
the Basilica Episcopal Library in St. John's today to
mark Heritage Day in this province, and to announce the
winners of the 2010 Heritage Day Poster Contest.
"Our heritage remains a
visible, strong presence in our day-to-day lives, in no
small part due to the many individuals and organizations
that are committed to preserving it for future
generations," said Minister French. "Heritage Day is a
time to reflect on the achievements of past generations,
and to accept responsibility for protecting our rich and
diverse heritage. As an organization which has protected
and promoted our built heritage for 25 years, I commend
the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador for
the important work they have done over the years, and
the dedicated effort they continue to demonstrate."
Today's Heritage Day
event included the naming of the overall winner of the
2010 Heritage Day Poster Contest, which was Carly Whyte,
a Grade 3 student at St. Anne's school in South East
Bight. Minister French and Shannie Duff, HFNL
Vice-Chair, presented Carly with her original drawing,
professionally framed.
"The foundation was very
impressed with both the quality and number of
submissions that we received this year," said George
Chalker, Executive Director of the Heritage Foundation
of Newfoundland and Labrador. "We are also pleased with
the participation of more than 50 municipalities across
the province, which have signed Heritage Day
Proclamations."
More than 400 students
from 40 schools submitted artwork for consideration in
this year's contest. Carly's winning submission will be
featured on HFNL's official Heritage Day Poster.
The winning submissions
at each of the other grade levels were: Elementary -
Jamie Young of Grey River, Grade 5 (All Saints All Grade
School); Junior - Jevon Wayne Marsh of Bonavista, Grade
8 (Matthew Elementary); and Senior - Jessica Madore of
St. John's, Grade 12 (Holy Heart High School).
Contest judges were

of Newfoundland and Labrador, Leslie Pierce, Historic
Site Development Coordinator with the Newfoundland
Historic Trust, and Kerri Button, Executive Director of
the Association of Heritage Industries.
