The purpose of RTK Week is to raise awareness about
people's right to access government information, while promoting freedom
of information as essential to both democracy and good governance.
In 2010, the Canadian RTK Week will take place from
September 27 to October 1. This year marks the
fifth year that Canadians have celebrated RTK Week, and there are a
great number of events planned coast to coast, including several in
Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Commissioner's Office, along with the Canadian
Association of Professional Access and Privacy Administrators (CAPAPA),
Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), the Access to Information and
Protection of Privacy (ATIPP) Office, the Canadian Bar Association (CBA),
and the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) will host an information
booth at the MUN Campus in the lobby of the Science Building, on
Thursday, September 30, 2010, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. As
part of this information booth there will be handouts as well as a RTK
Week survey, and prizes.
Also part of the 2010 RTK Week celebrations is the
launch of the first RTK Essay competition. This contest is open
to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians studying at the secondary or
post-secondary level, as well as non-residents studying at NL secondary
and post-secondary institutions. Further information on this competition
will be released separately.
The goal of RTK Week is to raise global awareness of
individual's right to access government information and to promote
access to information as a fundamental human right.
